A magnetic escutcheon is a security escutcheon that covers the lock cylinder completely with a metal plate that only slides aside when its magnetic key is held against it. From outside not even the keyway can be seen, so there is nowhere to start manipulating the lock.

To open it, you first hold the magnetic key against it, the cover moves and frees the entrance to the cylinder, and then you use your normal key.

It is very practical for homes that stand empty for part of the year, because it also protects the cylinder from dust, sand and salt. Like anything exposed to the weather, it needs a finish that can cope with the coast and a little care: if the cover starts to feel stiff, it is worth having it checked before it seizes.
