Rojales has two very different sides. On one hand there is the town itself, on the banks of the Segura, which flows through the old quarter on its way to the sea. On the other, there are the urbanisations of Ciudad Quesada and the surrounding area, where most of the population lives. According to INE data for 2023, more than 12,000 people lived in Ciudad Quesada, compared with around 5,000 in the old town.
It is not a beach municipality, although it borders Guardamar del Segura and the coast is very close. From Torrevieja, Ciudad Quesada is about ten kilometres away and the old town a little further.
One of the municipalities with the most foreign residents in Spain
Rojales is known for it. In 2022, according to the INE, around two out of every three registered residents were foreign nationals, and by far the largest group was British, followed by German. Many live here all year round; others spend long periods here and go back to their home country in summer or at Christmas.
For us this means two things. First, many people prefer to explain things in their own language: you can write to us on WhatsApp in yours. Second, there are many homes that are left on their own for weeks or months.
What the homes are like in Ciudad Quesada and Doña Pepa
These are urbanisation areas with a lot of variety: villas with a plot and a pool, townhouses, ground floor and upper floor bungalows, and complexes with communal areas. Many houses have outside railings, a front door, a terrace or kitchen door onto the garden and, sometimes, a garage or tool shed.
With so many doors, people usually end up with a bunch of different keys. One solution we are often asked for is keying lock cylinders alike: fitting cylinders that all open with the same key.
In the old town of Rojales, on the other hand, there are traditional village houses and flats, with older doors and the odd lock of the big-key kind that is worth modernising.
What is asked for most in Rojales
Lock cylinders when you buy a home
Ciudad Quesada sees a lot of buying and selling of resale homes. When you buy, the keys you are given are not the only ones in existence. Changing the lock cylinder in Rojales on the first day is the most sensible thing to do, and it is usually quick if the door is in good condition.
Shutters on homes that are left empty
Bungalows and single-storey villas with shutters at garden level, shut up while the owner is away. It is the typical case for shutter reinforcement in Rojales. We reinforce shutters so they cannot be lifted or bent, with a steel T-profile under the bottom slat and bolts that lock into the wall. With a photo on WhatsApp we can tell you whether yours can be reinforced.
Door opening
The door that slams shut when you go out to hang the washing, the key forgotten inside on the way to the pool, the lock that will not turn after weeks without use. We open without causing damage when the lock allows it. You will find the details under door opening in Rojales.
Aluminium and PVC terrace doors
Many urbanisation homes have aluminium or PVC sliding or hinged doors onto the garden. Over the years, the catch stops engaging, the handle works loose or the lock cylinder sticks. These are doors that can be improved a great deal without replacing them entirely.
Areas
As well as the old town, we work in Ciudad Quesada and Doña Pepa, which you will find linked further down, and on the rest of the urbanisations in the municipality.
How we work
A fixed quote before we start, ideally with a photo on WhatsApp. If, when we arrive, we see the job is different, we tell you and do not carry on without your agreement. Payment by card, Bizum or cash. And before opening a door, we check that the person asking has the right to enter: in an area with so many homes empty for part of the year, it is the best protection for their owners.
