Ciudad Quesada has a lot of resale buying and selling. A house may have had several owners, been let and been through more than one estate agency. When you buy it, you are given a bunch of keys, but nobody can guarantee they are all of them. Rojales is about ten kilometres from Torrevieja and it is an area where we work often.
One house, lots of locks
A villa or townhouse in Ciudad Quesada or Doña Pepa does not have one door: it has several. The plot gate, the front door, the kitchen or utility room door onto the garden, the terrace door and sometimes a tool shed. Each one with its own lock and key.
When you move in, it is worth going over all of them:
- The front door, first of all. If the lock is in good condition, a new cylinder may be enough; if it has play in it or the bolts do not come all the way out, the whole lock is replaced.
- The back door, which often has only a latch or a very basic lock.
- The aluminium or PVC terrace doors, which over the years stop locking properly.
If you end up with several new locks, we can fit cylinders that all open with the same key.
Buying or renting in Rojales
What we advise after a purchase also applies to renting. If you are an owner who lets your house, check the locking between one tenant and the next. We cover this in moving house or buying a home.
The old village
In the village, beside the Segura, there are traditional houses and flats with wooden doors and the odd old-fashioned big-key lock. Those locks no longer give the security people look for today and their keys are hard to replace. The usual thing is to convert them to a lock with a euro cylinder using the existing cut-out in the door, as we explain in converting a lever lock to a cylinder.
Sun, damp and houses left shut
Although Rojales has no beach, the coast is very close, and outside locks suffer from sun and damp. When the house goes weeks without being opened, the lock seizes and when you come back the bolts are hard to throw. If the case is rusted, cleaning is not enough and it needs replacing.
How we work
You send us a photo on WhatsApp of the edge of each door with the lock in view. We tell you which ones are worth replacing and give you a fixed quote before we start. If we find something different when we take them apart, we tell you and do not carry on without your agreement. You can pay by card, Bizum or cash, and you can message us in your language.
