Lock replacement in Guardamar del Segura

In Guardamar del Segura there are many holiday homes that have been passed down from parents to children. They are flats and houses opened every summer with the same old key, in locks that have been there since the property was bought. They work, until one day in July they stop working. Guardamar is about fifteen kilometres from Torrevieja and it is one of the towns where we come across the most old locks.

Sand, salt and months without use

Guardamar has some 11 kilometres of beaches and a large pine wood over the dunes. Fine sand and salt get in through the keyway and the faceplate of the lock. If the door is used every day, you soon notice when something starts to go wrong. In a house shut from September to June, you do not: the sand stays inside, the salt rusts the springs and when you come back the key goes in but will not turn, or the bolts will not come out.

Inheritances and keys handed out

In family holiday flats it is normal for keys to be held by brothers, sisters, cousins, a neighbour and whoever did the cleaning. When the property changes owner through an inheritance or a sale, it is time to close that chapter: the new owner changes the cylinder or the lock and gives new keys only to those who need them.

The same applies when you buy a resale home in Guardamar or let it out: between one tenant and the next it is worth checking the locking.

Village houses in the old town

In the old town there are still houses with wooden doors and old-fashioned locks, some with a long key. Sometimes it is enough to repair the lock and adjust it; other times the best option is to replace it with one that takes a modern cylinder.
