Guardamar del Segura lives two different years in one. In July and August the town fills with families who spend the summer here, many in flats passed down from parents to children; from September to June, a good share of those flats and bungalows are left with the shutters down. It is about fifteen kilometres north of Torrevieja, with Les Ortigues beach running on into La Mata beach, so for us it is almost like working at home.
Three types of house, three different cases
Ground floor flats near the beach
In the town and by the beach there are many blocks of flats with ground floor homes at street level. In summer they are full; in winter, many ground floor flats are left shut and the shutter is the only thing facing the pavement.
Bungalows in El Raso and other urbanisations
On urbanisations such as El Raso there are ground floor bungalows and townhouses with a garden or terrace and communal areas. The bedroom windows are within arm’s reach and, in many houses, look onto a patio or a side where nobody passes.
Houses in the old town
In the old town there are village houses with windows onto the street and shutters that have been in place for many years. They can be reinforced if the shutter is in good condition; if not, it has to be repaired first.
The pine wood and the quiet streets
Guardamar has a pine wood of some 800 hectares that was planted to hold the dunes in place, and the town sits right beside it. There are homes on streets that see very little traffic in winter. It is a very pleasant place to live, and also a place where an empty house goes unnoticed.
What the reinforcement involves
Under the bottom slat, the one that can be gripped from outside, we glue and screw a T-shaped steel profile of 4 mm. The T shape does not bend in any direction, and with it neither does the slat. At both ends of the slat there are bolts that slot into the wall. That is how we reinforce roller shutters so they cannot be lifted or bent. You have the system explained in detail in roller shutter security.
Do it in September, not in July
Our advice for Guardamar is simple: if your house is left shut after the summer, ask for the reinforcement before you leave. That way you do not leave the ground floor shutter as it is all winter. If you are also worried about squatters, the shutter is only one part; the other is the door, and we explain it in protection against squatters.
One photo is enough to get started
Send us on WhatsApp a photo of the lowered shutter from outside, another of the bottom part and another of the sides. With that we tell you whether it can be reinforced and give you a fixed quote before we start. If you live abroad or do not speak Spanish, message us in your language.
