Orihuela Costa is the strip of the Orihuela municipality that faces the sea, some 16 kilometres of coastline between Punta Prima and Dehesa de Campoamor. It borders Torrevieja to the south and we know it well. Almost everything built there is urbanisations, and a good share of its homes are second homes belonging to owners from central and northern Europe. That mix, low houses and empty houses, is exactly what most calls for roller shutter security.
The ground floor bungalow in a complex
The typical home in La Zenia, Playa Flamenca, Cabo Roig or Villamartín is an apartment or bungalow in a gated complex around a pool. The one upstairs has a terrace or solarium; the one downstairs has a small garden and windows at ground level.
That ground floor home has two sides:
- The one facing the communal area, with the terrace door and the living room window.
- The one facing the street or a side passage, often with the bedroom window.
In summer, with the complex full, there are people about at all hours. In winter many blocks are left with few homes occupied and the shutters down for months. Nobody walks down the side and nobody notices that a slat is bent until the owner comes back.
What we do to your shutter
We work on the bottom slat, which is the only one that can be gripped from outside. Underneath it we glue and screw a T-shaped steel profile of 4 mm. A T does not bend in any direction, so neither does the slat. At both ends we fit bolts that slot into the wall. With the slat rigid and anchored on both sides, we reinforce roller shutters so they cannot be lifted or bent.
You will find it explained at leisure on the main roller shutter security page.
If you live abroad
Many of our Orihuela Costa customers are not here when they message us. That is fine: you can send us the photos from your own country, write to us in your language and arrange the work with whoever has a key to the house, whether a neighbour, the property manager or the person who looks after it for you. If your home is shut for months, you will also be interested in what we say about second homes.
Where to start
If you are not going to reinforce every shutter, start with these:
- The bedroom window facing a side or the back.
- The living room one, if the garden is screened by a hedge or a high fence.
- Any ground floor window facing a communal area with little traffic in winter.
Send us a photo
Every complex has its own windows and shutters, so we will not say yes without seeing yours. To find out whether it can be reinforced, send us on WhatsApp a photo of the lowered shutter from outside, another of the bottom part and another of the sides. If it can be done, we give you a fixed quote before we start. There is more about the area in locksmith in Orihuela Costa.
