Roller shutter security in Torrevieja and its urbanisations

Ground floor flats in town, urbanisation bungalows and holiday lets: we reinforce roller shutters so they cannot be lifted or bent.

In a few decades Torrevieja has gone from around 13,000 registered residents to more than 98,000, and much of that growth is urbanisations of bungalows, townhouses and low-rise residential complexes. The result is a town with a huge number of windows within arm’s reach. We are locksmiths from here and we know that in Torrevieja a lowered shutter is very often the only thing between the street and the bedroom.

Where we see the most shutters at risk

Ground floor flats in the town centre and neighbourhoods

In town, in areas such as the Centro, El Acequión or Playa del Cura, there are many ground floor flats in buildings with a communal entrance. Windows facing the street have people passing by, but those facing a light well or the back of the building are seen by nobody. Those are the first ones worth looking at.

Urbanisation bungalows

To the south, in Los Balcones, Los Altos, Lago Jardín or Aguas Nuevas, and to the north, in La Mata or Torreblanca, there are many ground floor bungalows with a front garden or terrace. The living room and bedroom shutters face the garden, often screened by a hedge. In summer people sleep with the window open and the shutter down to let the air through; in winter, if it is a seasonal home, the shutter stays down for weeks.

Holiday rental homes

Lots of people pass through a tourist rental apartment over the year, and between one booking and the next the property may be left empty. If you have a home like that, also have a look at what we say about holiday rentals.

How we reinforce a roller shutter in Torrevieja

The system is the same in a ground floor flat in La Mata as in a bungalow in Los Altos. Under the bottom slat, which is the one that can be gripped from outside, we glue and screw a T-shaped steel profile of 4 mm. Because of its shape, the T does not bend in any direction, so the slat stops bending. At both ends of that slat there are bolts that slot into the wall, and with that there is nowhere to lift it from either.

Put in one sentence: we reinforce roller shutters so they cannot be lifted or bent. You will find the full explanation, piece by piece, on the roller shutter security page.

If someone has already tried to get in

If you find the bottom slat bent, scratched or out of its guides, do not force it to lower it all the way. Take photos just as it is and follow the steps in forced or lifted shutter. Often the shutter can be saved and reinforced afterwards; sometimes not, and we will tell you with the photos in front of us.

Before you shut the house for the season

Many Torrevieja owners live abroad for a good part of the year. If that is you, the most practical thing is to ask for it before you leave: with the house empty there is no longer anyone to see the shutter every day. Start with the windows that cannot be seen from the street and the ground floor ones that can be reached standing up.

Can yours be reinforced?

Without seeing it we cannot promise. Send us on WhatsApp a photo of the lowered shutter from outside, another of the bottom part and another of the sides, where it meets the wall. If it can be done, we give you a fixed quote before we start, and if we see something different at your home, we explain it before carrying on. Message us in your language. There is more about the town and its neighbourhoods on our locksmith in Torrevieja page.
