Door opening across the neighbourhoods of Torrevieja

In a town of almost a hundred thousand registered residents, with a huge number of homes that are only opened up a few weeks a year, getting locked out is about as common as it gets. Town centre flats and buildings with a shared entrance

In the old town, in El Molino, in Playa del Cura or in Los Náufragos, the usual set-up is a flat in a building with a communal entrance. If you are locked out with the keys inside, the street door is not normally the problem: a neighbour will let you in. The problem is the door of the flat itself, which may have been pulled shut or locked with the key.

If it was just pulled shut, opening it without damage is usually possible. If it was locked with the key, it depends on the cylinder and the lock. Urbanisation bungalows and townhouses

In Los Altos, Aguas Nuevas, Lago Jardín, Los Balcones or Torreta Florida there are plenty of bungalows with a patio and urbanisations with a pool. Here the door that causes trouble is often not the front door but the one to the patio or terrace, in aluminium or PVC. In summer it is typical to pop out to the pool with just a towel and have the wind shut the door behind you. Holiday rental apartments

Many apartments in Torrevieja have a different guest every week or every month. The person locked out is usually someone who does not know the property, with a single key from the agency or the owner. Before opening we check that they have the right to get in, just as if they were the owner; we explain how that is proved when you call. That check is what protects the owner who is thousands of kilometres away.

Homes opened up again after the winter

In La Mata, Cabo Cervera or Mar Azul, close to the sea, salt air gets into the cylinder of a home that has been shut up for months. The owner arrives at Easter or in June, puts the key in and it will not turn. Do not force it: a key forced into a seized cylinder ends up snapping and the opening gets more complicated.
