A huge number of homes are bought, sold and let in Torrevieja, and every change of hands leaves loose keys out there somewhere. Add the sea to that: in a town with some 20 kilometres of coastline, salt air ends up getting into the locks that face the street or the terrace. For those two reasons, lock replacement is one of the jobs we do most in town.
When you buy a home in Torrevieja
When you buy a resale flat or bungalow you do not know who has a key: the previous owner, the estate agency, a tenant who passed through, the person who did the cleaning. If the lock is in good condition, changing the cylinder is enough. If it is old, has play in it or the bolts do not come all the way out, it is worth replacing the whole lock from day one. We go into more detail in moving house or buying a home.
In the buildings in the town centre there are many armoured doors that are years old and still good, with locks that are no longer up to the job. In those cases we usually replace just the lock and keep the door.
Between one tenant and the next
If you let a flat in Torrevieja, long term or by the season, the keys pass through many hands. When a tenant leaves the property and hands back the keys, it is a good time to check the lock and decide whether it needs a new cylinder or a complete lock. The change of tenant page explains how to organise it.
Salt air in coastal locks
In the areas closest to the sea, such as Playa del Cura, Playa de los Locos, Cabo Cervera or La Mata, locks suffer more. Salt gets into the lock case, rusts the springs and the bolts, and one day the key turns but the bolt does not come out. When that happens, cleaning is usually no longer enough.
Some signs that the problem is in the lock and not just the cylinder:
- The bolts stop halfway or you have to push the door for them to go in.
- The latch does not spring back by itself and the door does not stay shut.
- When the faceplate is removed you can see rust or reddish dust.
Bungalows, villas and terrace doors
On the Torrevieja urbanisations many houses have a front door, an aluminium or PVC terrace door and sometimes a storage room door. Each one has its own lock and they are not all replaced the same way. Before touching anything we check which model fits the cut-out you already have, so it does not need enlarging.
How we do it
Send us a photo on WhatsApp of the edge of the door with the lock in view. We tell you what we would replace and give you a fixed quote before we start. If we find something else when we take it apart, we tell you and do not carry on without your agreement. You can pay by card, Bizum or cash, and you can message us in your language.
