A tenant may have had copies of the key cut, lent them to family or friends, or lost them. You do not have to distrust anyone to know that, when the person living in the property changes, the key should change too.
When to do it
The right moment is once the tenant has left, has handed over the keys and the property is empty. Before the next one moves in.
We will say it plainly: we never change the lock on a tenant who is still living in the property, even if the contract has ended or there are debts outstanding. If the tenant will not leave, that has to be resolved through the legal route, so speak to your lawyer. If possession is recovered after court proceedings, you will find the information under lock change after a court eviction.
What to do now
- Collect all the keys you handed over at the start of the contract and note how many you get back.
- Check the keys to communal areas you are responsible for too, and the garage remote if there is one.
- Take photos of the door and the lock on the day of the handover, in case there is any damage.
- Book the cylinder change before you give keys to the new tenant.
What not to do
- Do not give the new tenant the same keys the previous one had.
- Do not change the lock while the tenant is still inside.
- Do not leave the new key hidden in the entrance hall or in a letterbox for the next tenant to collect.
How we sort it out
We work 24 hours a day, every day, in Torrevieja and the Vega Baja. With a photo of the door on WhatsApp we know which cylinder you need and give you a fixed quote.
We change the cylinder on the front door and, if you wish, on other doors in the property or the storeroom. We hand you all the new keys. If you let the property often, we can advise you on a cylinder with controlled key copies, so you always know how many copies exist.
You will find the details under lock cylinder replacement.
Holiday lets
In Torrevieja’s holiday flats, people come and go every week and it is easy to lose count of the keys. Changing the cylinder every so often, or whenever a copy goes missing, is a good habit. There is more information under holiday lets.
