Torrevieja is our home. We grew up here and we have been working here for 15 years, so we know the town well and, above all, its doors. A flat in the Centro is not the same as an urbanisation bungalow that stands empty for half the year, and each one brings its own problems.
A coastal town that has grown very fast
Torrevieja is a coastal municipality in the Vega Baja with around 20 kilometres of coastline, right next to the La Mata and Torrevieja lagoons, which form a nature park. In the early 1980s it had around 13,000 registered residents, and today the INE (Spain’s National Statistics Institute) puts it at more than 98,000: it is the third largest town in the province of Alicante.
That growth has come from residential tourism. There are year-round residents and a great many homes that are only opened up in summer, at Easter or when their owners arrive from northern Europe. According to the municipal register, more than half of those registered are foreign nationals, from over a hundred different countries. That is why we look after you on WhatsApp in your own language: write to us in whichever one you find easiest.
The kinds of homes you will find
Torrevieja has a bit of everything, and that shows in the locks:
- Flats in the town centre, many in buildings with a shared entrance, a lift and storerooms or a garage in the basement.
- Ground floor and upper floor bungalows on urbanisations with a pool and communal areas, with an entrance gate shared by all the neighbours.
- Townhouses and villas with railings, a street door, a terrace door and often their own garage.
- Holiday rental apartments that many people pass through over the course of the year.
In a flat, the problem is usually the front door and its lock cylinder. In a ground floor bungalow, it is the shutters and the aluminium or PVC terrace doors. In a villa, it is the gate, the garage and those back doors that hardly ever get used and one day simply will not open.
Salt air and closed-up homes
Two things shape our work in Torrevieja: the sea and the seasons.
Salt air gets into lock cylinders and mechanisms, especially near the seafront and on doors facing the sea. A key that goes in stiffly, or that you have to jiggle before it turns, is telling you the cylinder needs cleaning or replacing. If you leave it, one day when you least expect it the lock will jam halfway and the door will have to be opened. Timely lock maintenance usually prevents that.
The other thing is a home that stays shut for months. When nobody goes in, locks seize up, shutters spend the winter down and a ground floor property with no sign of life draws attention. Many owners ask us to check their doors and shutters before they leave or just after they come back.
The services we are asked for most here
- Door opening in Torrevieja, when the door slams shut with the keys inside. It happens a lot in summer, with people going in and out to the beach or the pool with barely anything in their hands.
- Lock cylinder replacement when you buy a resale property. You never know how many copies are out there: the previous owner, a tenant, the estate agent, the cleaner or the neighbour who watered the plants.
- Shutter reinforcement on bungalows and ground floor flats. We reinforce shutters so they cannot be lifted or bent: a steel T-profile underneath the bottom slat and bolts at each end that lock into the wall. To find out whether yours can be reinforced, send us a photo on WhatsApp.
- Adjustment and replacement of locks on aluminium and PVC terrace doors, which stop closing properly with use and salt.
- Lock cylinder changes between seasons in rental flats, so you do not depend on keys that have passed through many hands.
Where we work
Across the whole municipality: La Mata, Torreblanca and Cabo Cervera; the town itself, with the Centro, El Molino, Playa del Cura, Playa de los Locos, El Acequión and Los Náufragos; and urbanisations such as Mar Azul, La Veleta, Aguas Nuevas, Los Balcones, Los Altos and Lago Jardín. Below you will find the full list with a page for each area.
How we work
Before we touch anything, we give you a fixed quote. The quickest way is to send us a photo of the door or the lock cylinder on WhatsApp. If, when we arrive, we see the job is different, we explain it to you and do not carry on until you are happy. You can pay by card, Bizum or cash.
Before opening a door, we check that the person asking has the right to enter. It is a moment’s inconvenience and it is what protects you and your neighbours. We are Spanish locksmiths, local born and bred, and in a town where so many people leave their home shut for half the year, trust comes first.
