La Veleta is on the southern coast of Torrevieja, about two and a half kilometres from the centre, along the seafront promenade and close to coves and small beaches. It is one of the oldest urbanisations in the municipality: its development plan was approved in 1968 and even then it set out areas for villas and others for detached blocks.

Houses with history and new developments

That mix is still there. There are villas with gardens that have stood for decades, many renovated and others just as they were built, and apartment blocks from various periods. In recent years, new developments of bungalows with a communal pool have also gone up in the area.

It is an area valued for being close to the sea and for its peace and quiet, with owners who live here all year round and others who come for part of the year.

Old locks that need replacing

In the older villas we still come across lever locks with large-bit keys, or some of the very first cylinders that were fitted. They work, but they offer little protection. A very popular option is lever lock to cylinder conversion, which lets us fit a modern cylinder without changing the door.

In a new build, the keys have been through the builder, the trades and the sales agent before they reach you. In a resale home, through the previous owner and who knows who else. In both cases, changing the lock cylinder is the first thing we recommend.

Terrace doors and salt air

Being close to the promenade, the aluminium and uPVC terrace doors feel the salt and the sun. The catches stop lining up and the handle goes loose. Many can be fixed by changing the lock for aluminium and uPVC without touching the whole door.
