Locksmith in Cabo Cervera (Torrevieja)

Cabo Cervera is the stretch of coast that juts out north of the old town, about four kilometres from the centre, between the beaches of Torrevieja and La Mata. It has a semi-urban beach and several coves among the rocks, and at the top of the headland stands the old watchtower, now in a park with a viewpoint.

An area of houses, not tower blocks

There are no large buildings here. The area is mostly villas with a plot and garden, semi-detached houses and townhouses, many with their own or a communal pool, and the odd low-rise complex. It is a quiet area, with year-round residents and also homes used for holidays.

That way of living shows in the locks: a house with a gate, a main door, a terrace door, a kitchen door to the patio and perhaps a garage ends up with five or six different keys.

Salt air, the great enemy on the headland

On a rocky point the wind brings salt almost every day. The cylinders on doors facing the sea rust inside, the springs lose strength and the key goes in worse and worse. The same thing happens to the strike plates on metal gates. We see it far more here than in the inland areas.

Our advice is not to wait until the key gets stuck. If you notice it is hard to turn, a check or a timely cylinder change saves you having to get the door opened with the house locked.

What we are asked for most in Cabo Cervera

• One key for the whole house. With keyed-alike cylinders we fit cylinders that all open with the same key, and you stop carrying a bunch of them.
• New cylinders when you buy. If you take on a second-hand villa, it is worth changing the lock cylinder on day one, because you do not know who still has a key.
• Ground-floor shutters. On single-storey villas and townhouses, shutter reinforcement stops them being lifted or bent: a steel T-profile under the bottom slat and bolts locked into the wall.
