Leaving your keys inside is so common that nearly all of us have done it at some point. The important thing is not to turn a slip of memory into a repair job.
What to do now
- Check your pockets, bag and car calmly. More than once the keys turn up where you were not looking.
- Call whoever has a copy: family, a neighbour, the person who cleans or looks after the house, the agency if it is a rental.
- Notice how the door was left: if it slammed shut without being locked with the key, opening it is simpler. If the key is in the lock on the inside, tell us, because it changes the way we open it.
- If there is a child, an elderly person or someone unwell inside, or something switched on, call 112 first if there is any risk, and then us.
What not to do
- Do not push wires, hairgrips or screwdrivers into the lock. It is the quickest way to break the cylinder or leave something stuck inside.
- Do not try to get in through a window or a balcony by climbing up the outside.
- Do not break a pane of glass to reach the handle: it ends up costing more and it is dangerous.
- Do not let anyone start work without first giving you a fixed quote.
How we sort it out
We work 24 hours a day, every day, in Torrevieja and the Vega Baja. We give you a fixed quote before we set off and, when we arrive, we check that you have the right to enter the property. We explain how you show this when you get in touch.
If the door is only on the latch, we can usually open it without touching the lock. If it is locked with the key, we look for the least invasive way in. And if the key is in the lock on the inside, we use techniques that take that key into account so the cylinder is not damaged. If a part ever has to be replaced, we tell you first and you decide.
You will find the details of each type of opening under door opening. If what happened is that the door blew shut in the wind, door slammed shut may also help.
On the coast it happens more than you would think
On the urbanisations of Torrevieja it is very typical to go down to the pool or the beach without keys because another member of the family stayed at home and then went out. If you are on holiday with several people, make sure each group carries its own copy.
