Door slammed shut

A door slamming shut is the most common emergency we attend in Torrevieja. It happens a lot in summer: windows open, the easterly wind (levante) blowing through and the door shutting by itself while you pop down to the pool or hang the washing out on the terrace.

What to do now

• Check whether there is another easy, safe way in: a terrace door left open, a ground floor window with no shutter down.
• Think about who has a copy: a relative, a trusted neighbour, the person who looks after your home, the estate agent if it is a rental.
• Check whether the door was only on the latch or was also locked with the key from inside. If it just slammed shut, opening it is simpler.
• If there is something on the hob, a tap running or a dependent person inside, tell us as soon as you get in touch. If anyone is at risk, call 112 first.

What not to do

• Do not try to open a security door with a card or an X-ray film: it does not work and you can damage the frame.
• Do not climb up balconies or the front of the building to get in through another window. It is not worth the risk.
• Do not force the lock with a screwdriver: what would have been a clean opening can end up as a broken cylinder.
• Do not let anyone start work without first giving you a fixed quote.

When the door is only shut on the latch, we can normally open it without touching the lock and without any damage. If it was locked with the key, we always look for the least invasive way in and let you know before doing anything that would mean replacing a part.

So it does not happen again

• Leave a copy of the key with someone you trust who lives nearby.
• If the door shuts by itself in the wind, a door stop or an adjustment to the door closer prevents it.
• Get into the habit of picking up your keys before you open the door, not after.
