Losing your keys is not just about being locked out. If the key ring carried anything that identifies your home (a tag, the garage remote, a card with the address), anyone who finds it may know which door it opens.
What to do now
- Retrace the last places you went and ask in bars, shops or at the town hall’s lost property office.
- Think about whether the keys could identify your home: tags, remotes, documents in the same bag.
- Let whoever has a copy know in case you need to get in straight away, and tell the residents’ association (comunidad de propietarios) if the key ring had the entrance key or the garage remote on it.
- If you think they have been stolen, it is a different situation: see stolen keys.
What not to do
- Do not leave the door as it is on the assumption that nobody will find them. If in doubt, change the cylinder.
- Do not hide a spare key under the doormat or in a plant pot in the meantime: it is the first place anyone looks.
- Do not try to open the lock yourself with tools: you may break it and make the job more expensive.
How we sort it out
We work 24 hours a day, every day, in Torrevieja and the Vega Baja.
If you are locked out, we check that you have the right to enter (we explain how you show this when you get in touch) and open the door with the method that causes least damage. Then we change the cylinder: that way the lost key no longer opens your door, wherever it turns up. If you are inside and have another copy, all that is needed is a cylinder change.
We give you a fixed quote before we start, including the cylinder. If you would like to take the opportunity to fit a more secure one, we explain the options with no obligation. You will find all the details under lock cylinder replacement and, if you want more protection, under security cylinders.
And the other keys on the ring
If the same key ring held the storeroom key, the shop key or the garage remote, think about those too. The association can deactivate the remote if it is a rolling code one, and the storeroom or shop locks are changed in the same way as the one at home.
Second homes
In Torrevieja many homes are only used for part of the year and the keys pass through several hands: family, neighbours, the cleaner, the agency. If one of those copies goes missing, changing the cylinder is the safest option, especially if the property is going to be empty for a few weeks.
