Stolen keys are more serious than lost ones. If your bag or wallet held your ID card, a bill or any paper with your address on it, the thief has the key and knows which door it opens.
What to do now
- Report the theft to the police. If you see someone trying to get into your home or think they could do so at any moment, call the police or 112.
- Change the cylinder on the front door today, even if you have another copy and can get in.
- Tell the residents’ association (comunidad de propietarios) if the entrance key or the garage remote was on the ring.
- Think about other doors whose keys were on the same key ring: storeroom, shop, a relative’s house, your second home.
- Block your cards and documents through your bank’s channels.
What not to do
- Do not leave it until tomorrow. The first few hours carry the greatest risk.
- Do not fit a temporary bolt and forget about the cylinder: the stolen key still opens it.
- Do not leave a spare key hidden outside in the meantime.
How we sort it out
We work 24 hours a day, every day, in Torrevieja and the Vega Baja. Send us a photo of the door and the cylinder on WhatsApp and we will give you a fixed quote.
If you have no keys left to get in, we check that you have the right to enter (we explain how you show this when you get in touch) and open the door with the least invasive method. Then we change the cylinder and hand you all the new keys. If your door has several locks, we check them all.
It is a good moment to think about a cylinder with more protection against the usual opening techniques. You will find it explained under lock cylinder replacement and security upgrades.
If the shop or garage keys were on it too
If the key ring held the keys to your business, treat it as just as urgent: change the lock on the shutter or the shop door. And if the communal garage remote was on it, let the property manager know so they can consider deactivating it.
If someone has already got in
If you get home and find the door open or signs that someone has been inside, do not go in. Call the police and follow the steps in home burglary.
Pay by card, Bizum or cash, and talk to us on WhatsApp in your own language.
