Discovering that your home has been burgled is a blow. Doing things in the right order helps you with the police, with your insurance and with your peace of mind.
What to do now
- Do not go in if the door has been forced or is open. Someone may be inside.
- Call the police or 112 from somewhere safe.
- Do not touch anything until the police have finished: not the door, not the lock, not the furniture, not the things that have been turned over.
- Report it and keep the copy. Note down the time you discovered it.
- Tell your insurer as soon as you can and ask what documents they need.
What not to do
- Do not tidy up or clean before the police have been.
- Do not throw away the cylinder or the broken parts of the lock: keep them.
- Do not stay the night with the door unlocked. If we cannot change the lock at that moment, at least secure the door temporarily.
How we sort it out
We work 24 hours a day, every day, in Torrevieja and the Vega Baja. Once the police have finished, we come out.
The first priority is to get the property locked: we check the whole door and change the cylinder or the lock depending on the damage, with a fixed quote before we start. We keep the damaged parts for you.
If you need it, on the same visit we prepare the lock report: what signs of forcing there are, what method was probably used and photos of each piece of damage. It can accompany your police report and your insurance claim. What your policy covers depends on your insurer. You will find the details under forced lock report.
After the burglary
It is worth checking how they got in and strengthening that point. Sometimes it is the cylinder, sometimes the shutter on a ground floor window, sometimes a terrace door. We explain it under security upgrades. If they also took your keys, change every cylinder those keys opened: see stolen keys.
If the house is your second home
In Torrevieja and on the Vega Baja coast many owners find out about a burglary while they are away, sometimes in another country. If a neighbour or your property manager lets you know, ask them to call the police and not to go in. We coordinate with whoever has access to the property and send you the report and the photos. Message us on WhatsApp in your own language.
