Forced or lifted shutter

In Torrevieja and across the Vega Baja there are a great many ground floor homes: bungalows, terraced houses, flats with a patio. The shutter is the first barrier on their windows and, without protection, it can be lifted fairly easily.

What to do now

• Call the police or 112, especially if the window is open or broken, or if you think someone has got in.
• Do not go into the property if you think someone may be inside. Wait somewhere safe.
• Do not touch the shutter or the window until the police have finished.
• Take photos of the shutter, the slats and the window once you are allowed to.
• Report it and keep the copy.

What not to do

• Do not force the shutter down or up if the slats are bent: you may pull it out of the guides.
• Do not leave the window unlocked that night. If the shutter will not come down, at least secure the window.
• Do not think «they did not get in, so it does not matter». Whoever tries a shutter usually comes back.

How we sort it out

First we leave the window shut and the shutter working: we put the slats back in the guides and replace any bent ones, or the strap if it has broken. All with a fixed quote before we start. There are more details under shutter repair.

Then comes the important part: making sure it does not happen again. We reinforce shutters so they cannot be lifted or bent. We fit a 4 mm steel T-profile, bonded and screwed underneath to the bottom slat; because of its shape, the T will not bend in any direction. If they did get in
