A security door has a lock with several locking points, a security cylinder and, often, a protective escutcheon. That makes it resistant to burglary, but it also means that, when it fails, it takes know-how to open it.
Why it will not open
- The cylinder is seized or worn. The key goes in but will not turn, or turns stiffly.
- A locking point has got stuck. The key turns, but the door will not give because an upper or lower bolt has not retracted.
- The door has dropped. Under its own weight, the leaf sags and the bolts press against the frame.
- Internal fault in the lock. A spring or a part of the transmission has broken.
- You are locked out without a key. It slammed shut or was locked with the key.
What to do now
- Try gently pushing or pulling the door while you turn the key: if a bolt is rubbing, sometimes it gives.
- Try another copy, if you have one.
- Check whether someone has left the key in on the inside.
- If someone inside is at risk (a child, an elderly person, someone unwell), call 112 first.
What not to do
- Do not lever the frame or hit the door. A security door will not give that way and the damage is expensive.
- Do not force the key with pliers: if it snaps inside, opening gets more complicated.
- Do not drill or remove the escutcheon yourself.
How we sort it out
We work 24 hours a day, every day, in Torrevieja and the Vega Baja. From what you tell us and a photo, we know which lock it is and give you a fixed quote.
When we arrive, we check that you have the right to enter; we explain how you show this when you get in touch. We always look for the least invasive way in. If the only option is to sacrifice the cylinder, we tell you first and replace it on the same visit. With the door open, we check what has failed and repair it or suggest the solution.
You will find the details under security door opening. If the door opens but is getting harder and harder, you will also want to see door repair and adjustment.
Second homes
In Torrevieja it is common for the security door of a property that has been shut for months not to open on the first day. The salty air seizes up the cylinder and the bolts. If you are coming back after a long time away, do not force the key: message us.
