A frame is the rigid framework or surround that holds a component and gives it its shape. In joinery people talk about the frame of a window, a hinged shutter, a fly screen or a security grille.

It is usually made up of upright stiles and horizontal rails joined at the corners. Inside it go the glass, the slats, the mesh or the bars.

For security it counts as much as the component it holds. Thick glass or a strong grille are not much use if the frame is loose or badly anchored to the wall. If you have a ground floor window or hinged shutter with gaps, or a roller shutter that does not inspire confidence, send us photos on WhatsApp. For roller shutters, take a look at shutter security.
