Door opening in Guardamar del Segura

In summer Guardamar fills up with families, sea breeze and doors that shut on their own. We open doors in the old town, on the seafront and in the urbanisations.

Guardamar del Segura is Torrevieja’s neighbour to the north, about fifteen kilometres up the N-332. It has around 18,500 registered residents, but in July and August it feels like a different town: families arrive from all over Spain and Europe to spend the summer here, many in flats that have been in the same family for decades. The door openings we do in Guardamar follow that calendar closely.

The summer of doors pulled shut

With the windows open and the sea breeze coming in through the balcony, a flat door shuts by itself as soon as you step out onto the landing. If it has only been pulled shut, held by the latch, opening it without damage is usually possible. If someone also locked it with the key on the way to the beach, it depends on the cylinder. Send us a photo on WhatsApp and we will give you a fixed quote before we come.

In August it is also typical for the family to share a single key between several people, for whoever went back to the village to take it with them, or for it to get lost in the sand. If the key really has been lost, it is a good idea to change the cylinder once the door is open.

Sand, salt and snapped keys

Between the beach and the pine woods, sand gets into everything in Guardamar. A cylinder with sand and salt in it turns stiffly, and a key forced into a stiff cylinder ends up breaking inside. It is one of the most common call-outs at the start of the season, when the house is opened up for the first time. If it has happened to you, do not try to pull the broken piece out with tweezers or a bit of wire, as you will only push it further in. We explain this in broken key extraction.

Old town houses with traditional locks

In the old part of Guardamar there are still village houses with wooden doors and old-fashioned locks that take a big key. They are opened differently from a door with a modern cylinder and, often, without any damage. If the wood has swollen with the damp, the door also rubs, and we take that into account too.

Bungalows in El Raso

In urbanisations such as El Raso there are plenty of bungalows and townhouses with a gate, a patio and a terrace door. Very often the door that leaves you outside is the terrace one, in aluminium or PVC, which has shut behind you when you went out to water the plants or hang out the washing.

First, checking that you can get in

In a family home used by several brothers, sisters or cousins, or in a flat let by the fortnight, the person locked out is not always the owner. Before opening we check that whoever is asking has the right to get in; we explain how that is proved when you call. If the paperwork is locked inside too, let us know.
