Roller shutter security in Rojales

Rojales has no beach, but it shares the same problem as the coast: lots of houses left empty. According to the INE, around two in every three registered residents are foreign nationals, with the British as the largest group. Many live here all year and go back to their own country for a few weeks in summer or at Christmas. Unlike at the beach, here there can be empty houses in the middle of August.

Most Rojales residents live on the urbanisations, not in the village. More than 12,000 people live in Ciudad Quesada according to the INE, compared with some 5,000 in the village. It is an area of villas with a plot and pool, townhouses, bungalows and complexes with communal areas, and something similar happens in Doña Pepa.

What we find in these houses:

• Single storey villas with every window within arm’s reach.
• Plots with a hedge or wall, where the back of the house cannot be seen from the street.
• Ground floor bungalows with the bedroom window facing a side.
• Kitchen or terrace doors onto the garden that are rarely used.

In a single storey villa there are no upper windows to escape the risk: every shutter is a ground floor shutter.

Rojales village

In the village, on the banks of the Segura, there are traditional houses and flats. There the risk lies in ground floor homes with windows onto the street and in back windows onto a patio. The system is the same, but the number of shutters worth reinforcing is usually smaller.

How we do it

We glue and screw a T-shaped steel profile of 4 mm under the bottom slat, which is where a shutter is gripped to lift or bend it. The T does not bend in any direction, so that slat stays rigid. At both ends of the slat we fit bolts that slot into the wall. With that we reinforce roller shutters so they cannot be lifted or bent. Before you go away for a few weeks
