The euro cylinder, “bombín europerfil” in Spanish, is the cylinder with a European profile: seen from the front, it has a round part at the top and a narrower extension below, like the outline of a keyhole. It is the most common model on doors of homes, business premises and storerooms in Spain.

It is held by a long screw that passes through the lock from the edge of the door, and in the centre it has a cam that, when turned with the key, moves the mechanism.

When replacing it, each side has to be measured separately, from the centre of the screw to the end. It can be symmetrical, with both sides equal, or offset. Ideally it should not stick out beyond the escutcheon, because a cylinder that protrudes is easier to break.

If you do not know what size you have, send us a photo with a tape measure next to it and we will guide you for the cylinder replacement or for moving up to a security cylinder.

Questions that mention it

Can the cylinder on an aluminium door be changed?

Yes. Aluminium and uPVC doors usually have a European profile cylinder, often a short one. It is changed without any problem, making sure the size is exactly right. Read the full answer
