The barrel, “bombín” in Spanish, is the everyday name for the lock cylinder, the part you put your key into to open or lock the door. It is the first thing attacked by anyone trying to get in without a key, so a good share of your door’s security depends on it.

There are several types according to shape: the euro cylinder, which is the most common in Spain, the oval cylinder, the half cylinder and the thumb turn cylinder, with a knob on the inside instead of a key. The size on each side and the level of protection against attack also vary.
