A spool pin is a security pin shaped like a cotton reel: wide at both ends and narrow in the middle. It sits in the upper part of the chamber, as a driver pin, and in Spanish it is known as “pin en carrete”.
It works in a similar way to the mushroom pin. If someone tries to manipulate the cylinder, the narrow section catches on the shear line and gives a false sense of progress.
With the correct key you notice nothing.
It is usually fitted together with mushroom and serrated pins so that the cylinder does not behave predictably. Combined with a narrow key profile and side locking elements, it raises resistance to lock picking considerably.
If you want a cylinder with this type of pin, we advise you on security cylinders.
