A dropped door is one that has sunk in relation to its frame, usually because the hinges have worked loose, worn or given way under the weight of the door leaf. You notice it because it rubs on the floor or the bottom of the frame and the lock no longer lines up with its strike plate.

It is very common with security doors, which are very heavy, and with doors that are used every day or that children swing on by the handle.

A dropped door closes badly and also makes the lock work under strain: the key goes stiff and eventually some part breaks. Adjusting the hinges in time is usually enough, without changing anything else. More under door repair and adjustment.

Questions that mention it

What do I do if my door has dropped?

Do not force it shut. It is usually a loose hinge, with the screws working free or the hole worn out; the hinge is adjusted or replaced and the leaf is set back in place. Read the full answer
