Galvanising is a zinc coating applied to steel to protect it from rusting. The zinc sacrifices itself before the steel does, so rust takes much longer to appear.

You can recognise it by its silvery grey colour, sometimes with a crystal pattern on the surface. It is common on security grilles, metal doors, fittings, screws and bolts, and outdoor fastenings.

On the coast it is a real advantage. The salt in the air eats away at unprotected steel in no time, especially on the seafront and in places that are not cleaned. When you choose fittings or metal parts for the outside of your home, ask whether they are galvanised or stainless. We help you choose the right ones when we look over your home in security upgrades.
