A hinged grille is a grille mounted on hinges that opens like a door and is locked with a lock, a bolt or a padlock.

Its great advantage is that the opening is not blocked for good. It is useful for windows that give onto a patio, for cleaning the glass from the outside or for having a way out if there is a fire. In a lived-in home it is advisable for at least one grille in the main rooms to be hinged and able to be opened from the inside.

The usual weak points are hinges that can be reached from the outside and a small padlock as the only lock. A well made hinged grille has protected hinges and a proper lock, sometimes backed up by a side bolt.

If yours rubs, has dropped or the lock no longer opens, it can almost always be fixed without replacing the grille. We explain it on our security grilles page.
