A sliding grille is a grille that slides along a track or folds to one side, so that the opening is clear when it is open and closed off when it is drawn across.
The most common are concertina or scissor grilles, made of hinged bars that gather to one side. You see them on terrace doors, on large windows and on shop premises that want to leave the shop window clear during the day.
For it to work properly, the top and bottom tracks have to be clean and aligned. Sand and salt air on the coast build up in them and make the grille jam or come off its track.
It is usually locked with a lock or a padlock at the end. Check that the grille cannot be lifted out of the track by hand. There are more details on our security grilles page.
