Railings (in Spanish, verja) are a barred enclosure, nearly always made of iron, that surrounds or marks out a plot, a garden, a patio or the entrance to a property. In Spanish the word verja is also used for the gate set into that enclosure.

They differ from a window grille in that they do not protect an opening in the façade but the perimeter. They are the first barrier anyone trying to reach the house comes up against.

On the developments of Torrevieja and the Vega Baja, low railings on a dwarf wall are very common, with a pedestrian gate and sometimes another for the car. On these gates, what fails most is the lock, punished by the sun and the salt air, and hinges that have dropped so that the gate drags.

Check now and then for rust at the base of the bars and on the fixings. There is more information on our security grilles page.
