A metal gate (in Spanish, cancela) is a barred door leading to a garden, a patio, a passageway or an entrance, or one fitted in front of the main door as extra protection.

It may have one or two leaves, with bars throughout or with a solid metal panel at the bottom. It usually has a surface mounted lock or one set into the frame, and on double gates a bolt that secures the leaf that is not used.

Metal gates live out in the open, and that shows in the lock: it seizes up, the key is hard to turn or the latch stops engaging because the gate has dropped. On the coast it is a good idea to lubricate it with a suitable product and check the hinges.

If you want to open the gate and the house with the same key, the cylinder can be keyed alike. For locks and adjustments on gates, see security grilles.
