An intruder alarm is a system that detects someone entering a home or business premises without permission and raises the alarm, with a siren, a message to your mobile or an alert to a monitoring centre.

It is made up of a control panel that runs the system, detectors spread around the house (opening detectors on doors and windows, motion detectors in the rooms), one or more sirens and a keypad or remote control to set and unset it.

One thing is worth being clear about: the alarm raises the alarm, but it does not stop anyone getting in. If the door can be opened in a few seconds, by the time the alert arrives they will already be inside. That is why an alarm works best as a complement to a good lock, an escutcheon and roller shutters that cannot be lifted.

We work on the mechanical side of that protection. We explain it on our security upgrades page.

Questions that mention it

Is an alarm any use if the lock is poor?

It helps, but it is not enough: the alarm warns you once they are already in, and a lock that opens easily gives plenty of time. Ideally the door holds them up and the alarm warns. Read the full answer
