Locksmithing is the trade of making, fitting, repairing and opening locks and fastenings. In Spanish the word cerrajería is also the name of the workshop or shop where the work is done, and in some places it also covers metalwork such as window grilles, railings and iron doors.

Today the trade covers very different mechanisms: lever and cylinder locks, multipoint locks, deadbolts, escutcheons, hinges, roller shutters on shops or window shutters. Each one has its own way of being opened, fitted and maintained.

In a coastal area like ours, a good part of the daily work has to do with salt air, which rusts lock cylinders and springs, and with homes that stay shut up for months. If you need help right now, there is our emergencies page.
