A roller shutter is made of linked slats which, as it goes up, roll around an axle housed in a box above the window. It is the typical shutter on homes in la Vega Baja.

Its main parts are the slats, the bottom slat, the side guide rails it runs in, the axle or roller tube, the shutter box and, on manual shutters, the strap and the strap winder.

It gives shade, keeps the heat out and closes up the house when you are away. But that is what it is made for, not for holding out against someone who wants to get in: the bottom slat can be gripped from outside to lift it or bend it. On ground floor flats and bungalows it is a clear weak point. We reinforce shutters so they cannot be lifted or bent.

Can any shutter be reinforced?
