A slat is each of the horizontal strips which, interlocked with one another, make up the curtain of a roller shutter. As the shutter goes up, the slats roll one over another around the axle in the shutter box.
The most common are PVC and aluminium. PVC slats are light, but in the strong sun on the coast they become brittle and end up cracking. Aluminium slats stand up to the weather better.
A loose or broken slat can be replaced without changing the whole shutter, as long as compatible slats are available. It is all in shutter repair. And if security is your concern, look at the last one, the bottom slat: that is the one attacked from outside. We explain it in shutter security.
