The shutter box is the box above the window or the terrace door that houses the axle and into which the shutter rolls as it is raised. It may be built into the wall, visible on the inside of the house, or on the outside for shutters fitted later.

On the inside it usually has a cover or access panel that opens to reach the axle. That is where faults such as a shutter that has come off its axle, broken clips or a loose strap pulley are put right.

A tip: do not put your hand inside the box with the shutter loose, because the axle can spin round suddenly. If your shutter has dropped or does not roll up properly, take a look at shutter repair.
