A vandal-resistant alarm is one that is built to withstand blows and tampering and to raise the alarm if someone tries to rip it off, open it or put it out of action.

It usually has a sturdy casing, screws that are hidden or cannot be undone with ordinary tools and a tamper switch that is triggered if the cover is opened or the unit is pulled away from the wall. It is seen mainly on the fronts of business premises, in communal areas and in places where the siren is within arm’s reach.

The point of it is that an intruder’s first move, which is often to smash or cover the siren, does not come free.

Like any alarm, it raises the alarm but does not prevent entry. What really holds someone back is a door, a metal shutter or a roller shutter that is hard to open. That is the part we work on: see security upgrades.
