Your door security check

Eight yes or no questions to find out how well protected your door is.

Your door security check

Most forced entries into a home take advantage of one of a handful of weak points: an unprotected cylinder, a door that only locks at one point, hinges that can be attacked or a ground-floor shutter that can be lifted. This test goes through them one by one.

How to do it

Answer with your front door in mind as it is today. If you do not know the answer, tick ‘I do not know’: it counts as a point to check, because what you do not know about is not under control either.

What to do with the result

Each point that falls short comes with a tip and a link to the service that sorts it out. There is no need to do everything at once: the first step is usually a security cylinder with its escutcheon and, on the ground floor, shutter security.

Door security check

1. Is your cylinder a security one (anti-bump, anti-pick and anti-snap)?
2. Does the cylinder sit flush with the door or escutcheon, sticking out no more than 3 mm?
3. Is there a security escutcheon protecting the cylinder?
4. Does the door lock at more than one point (deadbolt or multipoint lock)?
5. Are the hinges anti-jemmy, or does the door have hinge bolts?
6. Did you change the cylinder when you bought or rented the home, or do you know who has keys?
7. Are the ground floor or easy to reach shutters reinforced?
8. Does the door close easily, without pushing or lifting it?
