Garage or storeroom without a key

On the urbanisations of Torrevieja and the Vega Baja almost every home has a storeroom or a parking space, and those are the keys that go missing most: they are seldom used, kept on separate key rings and passed from hand to hand.

What to do now

• Look for the spare at home, in the car, or ask whoever sold or let you the property.
• Ask the property manager or the president of the residents’ association (comunidad de propietarios) if the door is communal: the association may hold a copy.
• If the storeroom belongs to a home you have just bought and nobody gave you the key, have the title deed or the contract to hand.
• If you see the lock forced or the padlock cut, call the police and do not touch anything until they have been.

What not to do

• Do not cut the padlock or the lock on a storeroom unless you are sure it is yours. In storeroom corridors it is easy to get confused.
• Do not force the door with a crowbar: they are usually sheet metal, which bends and then will not close.
• Do not try to open the communal garage by tampering with the motor or the automatic door.

Automatic doors and remotes
