Garage remote copying

On the urbanisations of Torrevieja and the Vega Baja, almost every shared garage opens with a remote control. When there is one remote for a whole family, when yours starts to play up or when a tenant leaves without handing it back, what you need is a copy that works first time.

First of all: remotes, not keys

This service is for remote controls for garage doors. We do not cut copies of keys. Nor do we install or repair garage doors or their motors. If the problem is the door or the motor, that needs to be looked at by the company that maintains the installation.

Can any remote be copied?

Not all of them, which is why we prefer to see it first. Broadly speaking there are two types of remote:

• Fixed code remotes. The remote always sends the same signal. They are copied from the remote that works and the copy is ready to use.
• Rolling code remotes. Every time you press the button, the signal changes. For security reasons, many of these remotes cannot be copied directly: the new remote has to be registered on the garage receiver. That step can be done by whoever has access to the receiver or by the person the residents’ association appoints.

With a photo of the remote from the front, the back and, if possible, the inside, we can tell you which case applies. That way you do not waste your time.

How we do it

1. You send us the photo on WhatsApp and we tell you whether it can be copied.
2. We give you a fixed quote before we start.
3. We make the copy from your remote, which has to be working. If the original does not work or you have lost it, tell us and we will look at the options.
4. We test the new remote on the garage door before handing it over.

For residents’ associations and property managers

In a residential community, the garage remote is also a security matter. It is worth knowing how many remotes are in circulation and who they were given to. We recommend:

• Keeping a record of the remotes handed out to each property.
• Asking the tenant or the seller to return the remote when they leave.
• If a rolling code remote is lost, discussing with the receiver company whether to deregister the lost one.

Lettings, purchases and evictions

It is very common for the garage remote to get lost in the shuffle when the person living in the property changes:

• In a sale, the seller hands over the keys but forgets the remote.
• In a holiday let, a remote or two goes missing every season.
• After a court-ordered eviction, the previous occupant hands over nothing.

In all these cases, if you have a remote that works, we make as many copies as you need. And for the property itself, the step you should never skip is changing the lock cylinder: we explain it in moving into or buying a home.

What we need from you

• The remote that works, so we can make the copy from it.
• How many copies you want: if there are several, they are prepared at the same time.
• For a shared garage, that the remote is yours or that the residents’ association agrees to you having an extra one.

A spare remote saves a lot of hassle

Keeping a second remote at home is the cheapest way to avoid being locked out the day yours fails. If your home on the coast is a second residence, leave one with the person who looks after it or with your property manager, and keep another for when you come back. That way nobody has to lend you theirs or leave the garage door open.

Remotes on the coast

Salt air affects remotes too: it corrodes the battery contacts and the buttons. If your remote only works now and then, sometimes changing the battery and cleaning the contacts is enough. If it still fails, it is better to make a copy before it stops working altogether, because copying a remote that still transmits is much simpler than doing it without one.
