Home with squatters

In Torrevieja and along the Vega Baja coast there are many second homes that stand empty for months, which is why we sometimes hear from owners who have found squatters in their home. We understand the despair, but it has to be done properly.

What to do now

• Call the police or 112 as soon as you find out and explain the situation.
• File a report and keep the copy.
• Gather the documents that show the property is yours or that you have a right to it.
• Speak to a lawyer as soon as possible. They are the one who will tell you what steps to take in your case.
• Talk to your neighbours or the property manager to find out how long people have been inside.

What not to do

• Do not go into the property or try to throw anyone out yourself.
• Do not change the lock while there are people inside, and do not ask us to: we will not do it.
• Do not cut off the utilities or do anything that could be used against you without first checking with your lawyer.
• Do not confront the people inside.

If a neighbour tells you about lights on, noise or people going in and out of your empty home, do not go and check on your own. Ask the police to verify it and, if the property is still unoccupied, reinforce the door as soon as possible.
