Because anything that sticks out of the door can be gripped. A cylinder that protrudes can be snapped or pulled out with a tool, and then the lock is left exposed.
It usually happens when a longer cylinder than needed is fitted, when the door or the lock is changed, or when a thin cover plate is fitted that leaves the part exposed. It is something we often see in homes on the coast.
It is easy to fix:
- Fit a cylinder that is exactly the right size for your door.
- Make it anti-snap, so that if it is forced the lock is not left exposed.
- Fit a security escutcheon that covers it and leaves nothing to grip.
See how it is done in escutcheon installation, or send us a photo and we will tell you how yours is.
