A fire door is a door designed to resist fire and slow the spread of smoke for a period of time, separating areas of a building. It is made of metal, it is heavy, and it is usually found at the access to the communal garage, to the stairs and to plant rooms.
To do its job it has to be closed when there is a fire. That is why it has a door closer or spring hinges that return it to its place by itself, and a plate or label showing its fire resistance.
The most common mistake in residential communities is to wedge it open so as not to have to open it. If it is hard to open or does not close fully, what needs doing is adjusting or replacing the door closer, never propping it open. We explain it in door closer installation.
