A hinge is the jointed part that joins the door leaf to the frame and lets it swing when opening and closing. It has two leaves, one screwed to the door and the other to the frame, joined by a pin.

There are many types. Butt hinges are the most common on internal doors. Concealed hinges cannot be seen when the door is closed. Spring hinges make the door close by itself. And barrel hinges, thicker and adjustable, are the ones fitted on security doors.

When a hinge loses its screws or the pin wears, the leaf drops a little, starts rubbing at the bottom and the lock no longer lines up properly. If you notice you have to lift the door to lock it, do not force the key: it is time to adjust it. You will find it in door repair and adjustment.

Questions that mention it

What do I do if my door has dropped?

Do not force it shut. It is usually a loose hinge, with the screws working free or the hole worn out; the hinge is adjusted or replaced and the leaf is set back in place. Read the full answer
