A keying chart is the plan that sets out, door by door, which keys open it within a master key system.

It is drawn up before anything is made. It records the doors, the groups they form, the key levels and who is going to carry each key. It usually takes the form of a tree: the grand master key at the top, the sub-master keys below and the individual keys at the bottom.

It serves two purposes. At the start, to design the system so that it fits how the community or the business really works. Later on, to know what to do when someone loses a key or leaves without handing it back: the keying chart shows which doors are exposed and which cylinders have to be changed.

Keep it somewhere safe and update it with every new copy. We draw it up with you as part of master keying.
