The grand master key is the highest level key in a master key system and it opens all of its doors.
In a community it is usually held by the president or the property administrator; in a business, by the owner or the manager. Everyone else carries individual or sub-master keys that open less.
Precisely because it opens everything, it is the key that needs most looking after. A few tips:
- Only a very few people should have it, and everyone should know who they are.
- Do not carry it on your everyday key ring unless you need to.
- Record every copy that exists on the keying chart.
If an individual key is lost, changing the cylinder for that door is enough. If the grand master key is lost, the problem affects the whole system and has to be looked at with the keying chart in front of you. We go through it with you on our master keying page.
