Lock bumping is an opening technique that uses a modified key, known as a bump key, which is inserted into the cylinder and struck. The blow sends an impulse through the pins that, for an instant, leaves the plug free to turn.
It became notorious because it opens many basic cylinders quickly and with hardly any marks, which makes it difficult to prove afterwards that the door was forced. It mainly affects cylinders with conventional pins.
How you protect yourself:
- With an anti-bump cylinder, with pins or locking systems that do not respond to the blow.
- By replacing an old cylinder with no paperwork as soon as possible, which is the most effective step.
- By asking for the technical sheet: a serious anti-bump cylinder states the test it has passed.
After a burglary with no signs of entry, it is worth having a locksmith inspect the cylinder; sometimes small marks are left at the mouth of the keyway. To choose the right one, take a look at our security cylinders or ask for a forced lock report.
