In locksmithing, a probe is a long, thin tool, rigid or flexible, that is inserted through a gap in the door to reach a part that cannot be reached by hand. It is used in non-destructive entry, for example when the door has been pulled shut without being locked with the key.

Its advantage is that it does not touch the cylinder or leave marks. Its limit is just as clear: if the door is locked with the key or the lock has several locking points, the probe is no use and another approach is needed.

A tip that follows from this: lock the door with the key when you go out, even if only for a moment. A door held shut only by the latch is much easier to open, for the locksmith and for anyone else. More on this on our door opening page.
