Precision opening (in Spanish, apertura fina) is the name given to the techniques that open a lock by working on its mechanism from the inside, with precision tools, instead of forcing it. It is the most skilled, hands-on part of the trade: it takes practice, patience and a sound knowledge of each type of cylinder and lock.

All precision opening is non-destructive, but not the other way round. A door held shut only by the latch can be opened without damage and without touching the cylinder. Precision opening comes into play when the locking mechanism itself has to be overcome.

Security cylinders are designed precisely to make these techniques very hard, with special pins and control parts. That is why a door with a good cylinder may take longer, or end up needing another approach. We go through it with you case by case, as we explain on our door opening page.

Questions that mention it

Can a door be opened without breaking the lock?

In most cases, yes. If the door slammed shut or the cylinder allows it, it is opened without damage; if not, as little as possible is broken. Read the full answer
